AdaptTable for Tailwind
Tree data in Tailwind
A tree grid is a different shape from a grouped table: the rows themselves nest, rather than being collected under synthetic headers. Compose tree() with getChildren or getParentId and it renders the hierarchy.
Children indent under their parent, a chevron opens and closes each branch, and arrow keys walk the tree the way a tree widget should. Expansion is part of the table's state, so it lives in the URL like everything else.
Sorting and filtering apply within the tree rather than flattening it. Moving a child under a new parent is a host callback on the row-reordering page — the table never rewrites your tree.
The tree parts carry no classes in this map, so the branch toggle is a browser-default button; the engine's indent still lands, which is what keeps the hierarchy legible until you style it.
The code
import { DataTable } from "@adapttable/unstyled";
import { tree } from "@adapttable/unstyled/tree";
export function Org({ people, columns }) {
return (
<DataTable
data={people}
columns={columns}
rowKey={(row) => row.id}
features={[
tree({ getParentId: (row) => row.managerId, treeColumn: "name" }),
]}
urlKey="org"
/>
);
}
Install
pnpm add @adapttable/unstyled @adapttable/core
The same feature in the other kits

- Tree data in Chakra — Soft teal, generous radius
- Tree data in Ant Design — Compact, tinted header, crisp
- Tree data in Radix — Radix Themes, iris accent
- Tree data in Base UI — Unstyled primitives, blue accent
- Tree data in shadcn — Monochrome, ring focus

- Rows in Tailwind — Pin rows, merge cells, and a 3-dot menu for add and delete.
- Row reordering in Tailwind — Flat, grouped and tree moves — keyboard, confirm, host writes.
- Inline cell editing in Tailwind — Kit-native editors in the cell; every write goes through your handler.
- Row grouping in Tailwind — Drag, keyboard and mobile grouping controls with live aggregation overrides.
- Aggregation in Tailwind — Footer totals, pinned summaries, group aggregates — not data rows.
- Nested tables in Tailwind — A real table under a row — same engine, own columns, own keys.
